Description
Tokoname-yaki Tea Pot by Sawada Tomohiro, 350cc/11.8oz. H.4.25"(10.75cm) x W.5.75"(14.5cm) x Dia.3.5"(9cm). 183 grams. Ceramic fine mesh strainer. The back handle gives the form a more Western appearance and feel, but it is suitable for any type of tea. Below the handle is the artisan's stamp "Tomo". Sawada Tomohiro was born in 1975 and is a fourth-generation Tokoname potter as the grandson of well-known potter Sawada Yuji (Shoson II). Tomohiro often uses glazes and firing techniques that result in a metallic looking surface to his pots.
Teapots from Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture are the industry standard when it comes to Japanese teapots. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there is probably one (on average) in most every household in Japan. The unglazed, iron-rich, red clay produces good flavor in green tea and retains heat well. Tokoname is known as one of the six ancient kilns in Japan. Tokoname wares range from individual artisan-crafted works, like this one, to mold-made production items. Either way, these forms have been perfected in terms of balance, pouring ability, and leaf-straining. Especially if you are new to Japanese green tea, a Tokoname pot will help you infuse a better cup of tea.
