Origin: Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture.
Cultivar: Kirari31

Kirari31 is a relatively new cultivar, registered in 2016, and being a cross between Sakimidori and Saemidori cultivars. Kirari means "burst of light". Teas from this cultivar generally have a good amount of umami (savoriness), and this one has a good balance of amami (sweetness) and shibumi (astringency), with a bit more sweetness on the early infusions and a bit more astringency on the latter infusions. The brew is a light green, and the tea drinks very smoothly.

Miyakonojou is in southwest Miyazaki Prefecture and borders Kagoshima Prefecture. The two prefectures share the Miyakonojou Basin, as well as the Kirishima Mountains and the Ouyodo River. Agriculture and agriculture-related manufacturing are two of the biggest industries, and tea from the area is well-known in the prefecture. Miyakonojou is also famous for the production of high-quality bows used in Kyuudo, or Japanese Archery.
