Description
These cups hail from the pottery town of Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture. Mashiko has been a key center of functional Japanese pottery wares since the mid-1800's. Known for sturdy folk pottery in the late 19th C. through the mid-20th C., Mashiko then became a mecca for independent studio pottery artists with the arrival of Hamada Shoji, who later was designated a National Living Treasure for carrying on and interpreting the traditions of Japanese Folk Pottery. Still today, Mashiko carries on the traditions of functional pottery along with nurturing independent studio artists potters.
