They have good volcanic soil, and mountain foothills that receive heavy morning mist and fog, ideal conditions for Japanese tea growing. The history of tea production in Kirishima goes back to the early 1300's, with the tea seeds said to have been brought from Hannya-ji Temple in Nara.
